“We are becoming a geography of hybrid selves of different cities or countries who stand at the threshold of numerous mundos”. - Gloria Anzaldúa
The project Nos/Otras (Us/Others) is a collaborative visual exploration of the lived experience of a group of Latin American women in Ireland and my own meditation on the complexities of photographic practice.
The work presented includes photographic portraits of the collaborators, self-portraits, and a short film. Using a photo-voice technique, the film presents still images intertwined with the voices of Yazmín Gallegos, Ludmila Altamirano, and Verónica Campelo who reflect on their photographs and experiences as migrants, as well as my reflections about the problem of representation in photography.
Nosotras is the Spanish feminine of 'we' and Nos/Otras with the slash suggests two words within one, we/others. Both words propose that while on the one hand, we can think of ourselves as a community, yet there are also differences within us. On the other hand, the fact that we are ‘others’ goes hand in hand with the process of constant transformation of our identity through our journey.
Nos/Otras short-film (15 minutes)
In the film, Yazmín Gallegos, Ludmila Altamirano, and Verónica Campelo express their point of view by photographing their subjective reality intertwined with the artist's reflections on the photographic endeavor.
